The very first Ronald McDonald House® opened in Philadelphia in 1974. The original idea became a reality at other locations, and today there are 269 Ronald McDonald House programs in 30 countries around the world.
The Oklahoma City Ronald McDonald House is located at 1301 Northeast 14th Street. Our mission is to benefit children by providing "A Home Away From Home" for families with seriously ill or injured children who are receiving medical treatment in the Oklahoma City area. The House is a warm and caring retreat for families in often, stressful circumstances.
Since the House opened, it has served families representing all of Oklahoma and every state in the country. It is the only facility of it's kind in Oklahoma City. The House is open to any family with a child 21 years of age or under receiving medical treatment in Oklahoma City, regardless of their economic status.
Ronald McDonald House Charities ® of Oklahoma City is a non-profit organization guided by a volunteer Board of Directors. We depend on the local community for the support of ongoing operations and improvements to the House. The McDonald’s Corporation licenses the charity and was instrumental in helping to establish the Ronald McDonald House, providing an initial grant of $150,000 over a three-year period. Since the establishment of the House, the majority of our support comes from the community through individual and corporate donations and fundraisers.
The house staff includes an Executive Director, Development Director, House Manager, Night Managers, and a Housekeeper. Since the House is always open, we rely on our many wonderful volunteers who help in various ways with the operations of the house.
Families often face real hardships during their child’s illness. Through monetarty and in kind donations, we are able to lightnen the burden of lodging and meal expenses. Our families experience a network of support from other families in similar circumstances.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oklahoma City fulfills it's mission to benefit children. One mother who stayed at the House recently wrote, "Your entire staff obviously enjoys what they do and the daily interactions with them made us feel like part of the RMH family. What a pleasant surprise to be able to interact with so many other people who were staying there and to enjoy a slice of life with people that we otherwise would not have met. The meals provided many evenings by the different volunteer groups coming in, made for easy moments of conversation. We all got to know one another during a time when we were all missing our families and everyday life. Thank you for taking us under your wing and providing a home for us in a manner that we could otherwise not afford. Where else can you find a fully functioning "household" to stay away from home?"
